Information
Opened some time before the turn of the century as an extension to the churchyard of St. Lukes C of E Church, the cemetery is set on an area of flat ground at the junction of two busy roads. Well maintained metal railings encompass the cemetery and provide a very open appearance. The original part of the burial ground is easily distinguishable from the more recent extension by the nature, size and design of the memorials. The records and registers for this particular area of the cemetery are not comprehensive and therefore grave location can prove difficult.
Until recent years, the walks in the cemetery were constructed of red shale brought from the nearby collieries, however, construction work has now provided excellent tarmac paths that compliment the aesthetic appearance of the cemetery.
Several large trees grow within the site to give dimension and character to the cemetery, but in the main smaller species of trees have been planted around the boundary edge. A small pleasant cemetery with several interesting and attractive features.
The cemetery now provides a facility for the interment of cremated remains in a small memorial garden.
