Ferrybridge Cemetery

Pontefract Road,
Ferrybridge,
Pontefract

Location/Direction

Situated on the edge of a residential development on the main Ferrybridge to Pontefract Road, the cemetery is laid out on a small flat piece of ground some 100 metres from the bridge carrying the M62 Motorway. The farmland to the rear of the cemetery houses the site of an ancient henge, which the County Archaeological Unit excavated in 1990. The largest landmark on the horizon is Ferrybridge Power Station, and the comprehensive enormity of the huge cooling towers and chimneys create an overbearing presence over the whole area.

Information

One of the smallest of the cemeteries under the control of the Wakefield Council, Ferrybridge contains few monuments of any size or architectural interest. This may be due to the comparatively recent opening date which is unusual and showed great forethought on the part of the Burial Authority of the time. On passing through the ornate wrought iron gate with its pedestrian opening, the unsuspecting visitor is immediately confronted with a view which relays a sense of compactness.

The cemetery was extended in 1991 with the provision of land to the west of the original cemetery which taking into account the limited space available for burial purposes within the area, could become the principle burial ground in the Pontefract District in the years ahead. With the exception of the small boundary wall with its fancy iron railings, which runs the length of the cemetery alongside the main road, the rest of the cemetery is encompassed by four foot high railings and chain link fencing.

The cemetery now accommodates burials on the lawn type system, also provided is a facility for the interment of cremated remains in a small memorial garden. The tarmac walks are straight and dissect the grave sections into rectangles which in turn contribute to the overall unobstructed appearance of this small yet pleasant cemetery.
