Information

Opened as an extension to the existing churchyard, the cemetery contains several interesting features. Immediately surprising is to find that the memorials on the older sections face away from the church, therefore, the first view a visitor sees on entering the cemetery is the back of hundreds of memorials.

The more modern area of the cemetery has been laid out on the lawn type system and an attempt was made in the 1960's to regulate and standardise the type of memorial, which would be permitted. This idea did not meet with public approval and was soon discontinued. The registration and grave numbering at the cemetery is very poor and several past attempts to rectify the problem have only succeeded in making the issue more difficult. The cemetery is flat and has tarmac walks, which in the past have been edged with old derelict kerbstones. Also included on the site is a facility for the interment of cremated remains in a small memorial garden.

Standing around the perimeter like weather-beaten guardsmen are large sycamore and chestnut trees which give a feeling of age to the cemetery. The whole site is dominated by the overpowering presence of the huge church.
