The Indices of Deprivation 2004 (ID2004) provides measures of deprivation at the small area level throughout England. The ID2004 is based on lower layer Super Output Areas (SOAs) which are new geographical areas of approximately equal population size. There are 209 SOAs in the Wakefield District with the average SOA containing around 633 households and 1,500 people.
There are 37 deprivation indicators which measure various elements of deprivation. These are grouped together to create a focus on themed factors such as Employment and Education. The overall Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) is assigned a national rank. A rank is given to each of the 32,482 SOAs in England. The most deprived statistical area for each Index is given a rank of 1 and the least deprived is given a rank of 32,482.
