Chapel & Church

Walton Methodist Chapel exterior photographed in 2003 There were two places of worship for the community in Walton in the 19th century. The Methodists were worshipping in a building in the Balk but by 1856 had built a small chapel on Shay Lane. In 1896 larger premises were needed so a bigger chapel was built incorporating the original one and then in 1910 Sunday school rooms were built on.

The Church of England community had always had to attend worship at St. Helen's in Sandal but in 1857 a small part of the National School was used as a place of worship and the Vicar of Sandal or his curate would conduct the service on Sunday afternoon. Children attended Sunday school in the Mission Rooms and these rooms were used for many community activities until the building of the new Church Hall in 1913. This later became the Parish Hall.

The Simpson family provided the land on the Balk for a new Church and also much of the material with which to build it and it was dedicated by the Bishop of Wakefield in January 1898. In the 1960's the original prefabricated walls were replaced by stone and the clergy from St. Helen's still serve St. Paul's community in Walton.
