Ossett's Coat Of ArmOssett lies approximately 4 miles to the west of Wakefield city.  It is a pleasant market town developed around a large central area which has recently been refurbished for improved pedestrian usage and as the location for a twice weekly market.

The town's industrial origins lie in the manufacture of shoddy, a chief component in the manufacture of wool.

In addition, the quality of medicinal springs around the town were once compared to the likes of those at Cheltenham.

The Town Hall, a Grade II listed building erected between 1906 and 1908 at a cost of £23,000, forms the centrepiece of the town centre and its impressive façade dominates the market place and pedestrian precinct. Its main hall is regularly used by local societies and touring acts as a venue for concerts and theatrical presentations. In addition, the Town Hall has within it a full sized theatre organ, one of only a few remaining in the country, and the Northern Theatre Organ Trust regularly presents concerts of music played on this instrument.

Nearby, Gawthorpe hosts the Annual World Coal Carrying Championships for men and women whereby competitors carry a sack of coal through the streets of the village on Easter Monday.
